On average people read only 60% of an article.
So, if you think that no one wants to read your articles till the end, don’t worry. Most people don’t want to read anything till the end. It’s a common problem for writers.
But I am sure you want more people to read your writing beyond the intro.
I discovered 5 hacks that helped me boost my read ratio from 20% to 70%+ (read ratio is the percent of people who read your story for at least 30 seconds). I will share them with you. Keep reading.
My Read Ratio Was Between 20% and 40%
When I was a new writer like you, I struggled with my read ratio.
I started to write in 2023. It took me 100 published articles with a read ratio between 20% and 40% to learn how to increase it. Now everything is different.
My read ratio is 70%+ for the best stories.
Here are 5 hacks that will help you captivate your readers and keep them reading till the end.
5 Proven Hacks to Increase Your Read Ratio
1. Write killing intros or skip them
Yes, you got it right.
Your intro should do all the heavy lifting for you. It should grab the reader’s attention. Make it impossible for them to leave until they read the article.
But how can you do this?
Use proven frameworks that work well.
Here are 3 frameworks that work every time:
Begin with a mind-blowing fact
Challenge the status quo
Focus on the pain
Learn to use them.
If you can’t write killing intros, make them as short as possible. Go directly to the main part of the article. Give your reader its core and they will stay longer.
2. Create a clear section structure that is easy to follow
If you don’t have clear sections, it makes your story harder to read.
Use an outline when writing a story.
Make the story structure visible to the reader.
Use bold subheadings to clearly split different sections.
Creating a transparent section structure makes it easier to follow and read your story. Thus, helping readers to stay longer. They want something easy to read, not hard.
3. Make them feel the rhythm of your writing
Some writers like to use long, complicated sentences.
Others prefer short, punchy ones.
Do you know what they have in common?
They use repetitive sentence structure, which creates a monotonous rhythm. It makes reading a boring exercise. Guess how many readers want to complete it?
Mix short, punchy sentences with longer ones to create a rhythm.
Rotate your paragraphs. Avoid doing this randomly. Create a rhythmic paragraph structure that supports the approach to sentence length.
You can do it using a variety of different paces, 1–3–1, 1–4–1, or 1–2–2, etc.
It’s up to you. Just choose some rhythmic structure and stick to it. It will help you control the story flow and the reader’s attention.
4. Drop weak words to make your voice stronger
Writing requires strong and direct language.
That’s what readers want to see. They don’t want to make their way through unclear, vague phrases that lead nowhere. They want a clear message.
Weak words:
quite
likely
really
basically
probably
They make your writing weaker.
Remove them to strengthen your voice.
5. Leave white spaces to make it effortless to read
One of the most popular mistakes new writers make is the wall of text.
Sometimes it can feel like a writer tries to write the whole story as one paragraph. Making it impossible to read. Text wall is the fastest way to push a reader out of the story.
If you want readers to stay longer, give them space, white space.
How can you do it?
Split your story into more paragraphs with white spaces between them.
One paragraph can be 3 sentences, 2 sentences, even 1 sentence long.
Use bullet points and numbered lists, which also help to create white spaces.
Always create more white space in your writing.
You can captivate your readers to stay till the end of your story. And the hacks I shared will help you do this. Keep writing and improving your craft.
